Search Console data: delays, missing queries and what they mean for alerts

· 4 min read

The last few days are not final

Performance data for the most recent days can still change. Comparing a provisional day with a finalised one makes yesterday look like a crash. Use finalised data for alerts and state clearly how fresh it is.

Some queries are never shown

Google withholds very low-volume queries, so query rows do not add up to the property total. A query that is missing from this week's export may still have had impressions. Absence of a row is not proof of zero.

Row limits bite on large sites

Requesting many dimensions over a long date range returns only the top rows. Fetching one day at a time gives more complete detail than one large request.

What good monitoring does about it

  • Alerts on finalised days only
  • Compares like with like: same weekdays, equal-length windows
  • Requires minimum volume before flagging anything
  • Treats a vanished low-volume row as unknown, not zero
