Anchor text checker

Enter a URL to see all of its links grouped by anchor text, split into internal and external, with weak anchors highlighted.

How to use the anchor text checker

  1. Enter the URL of the page to audit.
  2. Select Check anchor text.
  3. Start with the summary: empty and generic anchors are the quickest wins.
  4. Review any anchor text that points at more than one internal URL.

Examples

Generic anchors

Six links say “Read more”. Replace them with text describing the destination, such as “Read the tent buying guide”.

A mixed signal

“hiking boots” links to both /collections/hiking-boots and /blog/hiking-boots-guide. Decide which page should rank for the term and use the phrase for that one.

Understanding the results

Descriptive
Text that tells users and search engines what the destination is about.
Generic
“Click here”, “read more” and similar. They carry no topical meaning.
Empty
A link with no text and no image alt text. Inaccessible and uninformative.
Image
An image link; its alt text acts as the anchor.

Does this check backlinks?
No. It audits the links on the page you enter, which is what you control directly.
How many links are analysed?
Up to 2,000 links on the page.
